Description (Last modified by Jan-Nik)

PackageKit is a wrapper program that can use any packet management system. You can use it for native dependencies resolution. Also you can write an backend for autopackage and "Manage 3rd party software" could be packagekit based.

The PackageKit? developers are currently working on files which will contain informations about how to install a package on several distros: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/packagekit/2008-June/003130.html

This definitely sounds like it could be used for native package manager integration.. At least the depsolver parts.

I've created a new milestone 1.5, IMHO it's impossible to fix it earlier.

Ok. Just for the record - while 1.3 is in development, it is ok to do larger changes (as long as we maintain backward compatibility of course). When we enter RC and 1.4 is released, it's frozen again.

Might be wise to wait to 1.5 anyway though

Ok. I just thought, that bringing 1.4 out shouldn't be delayed anymore as more and more people are switching to 64 bit. (BTW: That's also why I renamed the 1.3.1 milestone to 1.4)

Implementing PackageKit support is definitely not an easy job and will require a very large amount of new code.

Anyway: We need to wait until PackageKit "bundles" are available, don't know if that's already in the latest PackageKit version.
